![]() The following comments appeared on Ancient-Future co-editor Jonathan Bennett's blog when he posted a prayer for the Holy Father John Paul II. AOL News linked over to his article, and the result was that we received hundreds of comments about John Paul II. Here are the ones that are a tribute to him and to his work. Notice the different languages, nationalities, and even the non-Catholic contributors. These are a testimony to our departed holy father. Even many Protestants from diverse backgrounds truly loved our departed pope. [Ed. Note: these were written before he had departed and reflect that context. We have not corrected any spelling or grammar. Also, since this is based on reflection immediately after the death of John Paul II, we cannot add any new tributes to this particular page.]. We offer this as a tribute to the life and work of Pope John Paul II, or as many call him, "John Paul the Great." The Tributes and PrayersMay the Good Lord, when it is time to take our dear and Holy Father Pope
John Paul II, bring him to His Heavenly throne in a peaceful way. May our Blessed Virgin Mary which our dear Pope had an ardent affection, wrap him in the mantle of her protection and the
fold of her arms. May all the angels and saints, escort him to his heavenly
throne to meet the Lord Almighty. We ask these to you oh Dear God through Jesus
Christ our Lord. Dear Pope John Paul, we love you and will truly miss you.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all what you have done for us here
on earth. Please pray for all of us when you are there in your heavenly throne.
MAY GOD BE WITH YOU ALWAYS AND MAY YOU BE SOROUNDED BY ANGELS AND SAINTS HEN
YOU ENTER THE HEAVENS AND ALWAYS REMEMBER US AND PRAY FOR US LIKE YOU DID WHILE
YOU WHERE HERE ON THIS EARTH. WE WILL MISS YOU DEARLY. |

I am grateful for the Holy Father and his leadership in the Catholic Church
for these some 26 years. I was in the Navy stationed in Naples Italy in 1978 when John Paul II were elected. I pray this
day for his comfort. He has been a constant force in this world of change and
fast movement. He has truly lived the life of faith and suffering to mirror as
much as possible that of the Lord Jesus Christ. My wish is for him is to be
granted eternal peace and may God grant him entry into the Kingdom of Heaven
and continue to look down upon us on earth so that we may continue to feel his
spirit.

I would like to comment that this Pope, im my
opinion, Pope John Paul the Great, has lived a holy life, a life filled with
heroic virtue.
The Holy Father was very instumental in my becoming a
Catholic Christian. His stance and Doctrinal Objective Truth that cannot change
in a hedenistic self centered world, is undeniable a
sign to the Church and World that he is a great Successor of St.Peter.
The Devil uses the pressures and pleasures of the world inorder
to fight agaist the Church. Our Holy Father has used
his wisdom and great union with God via a very intense prayer life to battle
the evil one, and endeavor to keep the ship of the
Church safe in the sea of uncertainty that we all live in what the age calls
the post-Christian Era.
My God Grant John Paul the Second his greatests
blessing and deserved rewards. An may Christ preserve
and protect us as a new Pope is in the near future elected.

voices had been muffled. May you now travel the highest road we can know, that

Pope John Paul II has done so much for the world. He has been a beacon of
light in this world of darkness. He has tried his hardest to unite the Eastern
Orthodox Church with the Roman Catholic Church. As a Catholic I don't know any
other man who has worked so hard for Peace and goodness. I will miss Pope John
Paul II dearly and I hope that everything that the Pope has worked hard for for many years, someday will make a huge difference in this
world. Thank you Pope John Paul II so much for everything you have done!

"May there be revealed once again in the history of the world the
infinite salvific power of the Redemption, the power
of merciful love! May it put a stop to Evil! May it transform consciences! May
there be manifested in your Immaculate Heart the light of Hope for all! (Pope
John Paul II March 25, 1984 extracts)." A true believer and disciple of
God comes calling to Heaven's Gate to meet Him face to face. This blessed child
of God will surely rejoice in hearing the loud sound of clarions inviting him
to sit at the supper table with Jesus.

I think Pope John Paul II has many people praying for him now, but his
situation looks very serious. I appreciate that God gave us such a great pope,
the only one I've really know my whole life. I admire his efforts to unite the
Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches, and hope his efforts will bring forth
more unity in the future.

My father died on January 21, 2005 with complications related to Parkinson's
Disease. The last six months of his life were difficult for us to watch for, as
has happened to Our Holy Father John Paul, he physically waned. Like the Pope
he remained lucid until the last day of his life and died with dignity in his
own home and bed. I pray that the Lord God will welcome Pope John Paul soon
into His heavenly kingdom. I pray that the Blessed Virgin is opening her arms
to Our Pope, even as I type, and that Our Lord Jesus is standing beside Her to
welcome Pope John Paul with, "Welcome, Good and Faithful Servant."
John Paul was sent by God to serve us and he accomplished so very much.

the Pope was known as the Pope of Mercy, we need to swing open the doors to our

Pope John Paul II has been as inspiration for the sake of unity among Christians on Earth. He has stepped out of the traditional theological line that once seperated Catholics and Protestants to show that there is one thing that truly matters: Christ. He has not only talked the talk, but he walked it as well... no other Pope in the history of the Church comes to mind when I think of one that has done so much for the entire world, even with those who didn't believe in anything...
I thank God for the birth of such a wonderful person. If the Pope be in his
last days and hours or if there are still years ahead for him (God only knows, may his days be blessed and may his works and
faith always be remembered...

I don't really know what I want to say-as I was driving to work this
morning, I heard the news of the pope's grave condition, and felt,
surprisingly, like crying. I am not a practicing catholic, although I was
baptized in that faith. I feel nothing but admiration for the pope-he is one of
the very few positive role models left in this nation. It will be a sad, sad
day when he is gone from this world. All of the prayers that I can think of, I
am saying for him this day. I hope he does not suffer much longer-he has borne
so much already. God bless you, Pope John PaulII, and
may you have a safe and speedy journey to meet Him to whom you have dedicated

I saw you once, in 1979, when you came to Washington, DC,
when I was 7 years old. You have been known as the "people's pope"
for all that you have done to welcome people into your heart and into your life
as well. Why else would there be so many people standing vigil at St. Peter's
right outside your window waiting with you? I wish I could be there.
I have a feeling that you are not ready to leave this world just yet, but God
is certainly calling you. So many wonderful people have left this world not
being able to fulfill their dreams. You have been a light to so many people.
God must surely have a special place in heaven picked out just for you!! It is
time for you to let go and follow that light!! You will be ok, and so will we.
We will miss you very much. But, you will be reunited in heaven with Jesus, all
the angels, and members of your family that you have not seen in a long time.
It is too bad that you cannot go there for a visit and just come back. But,
just remember, God will take care of you, and He must need you now. He has been
waiting for so long. If you happen to meet anyone with the names of Rosa,
Loretta, Mary, Gertrude, Eleanor, two Roberts, and my
animals, Patches, Khan, Cupcake, Tigger II, and
Harley, up there when you get there, please tell them that we Rumplers have not forgotten them, nor will we ever.
Thank you for being such a great Pope. You have waited long enough for your reward
in heaven. Now it is time for you to receive it. May God grant you a safe
journey home. I know that you will not forget us, just as we will never forget
you. Farewell and Godspeed on your journey to that great light in the sky.

was so hot and thousands of other youth gathered together in faith filled
community. What a gift you were to all who encountered your presence. I pray

Though I am not of the Catholic faith I am a respector
of this great man for peace, Pope John Paul. He has as much as any person, and
more than most given himself to the Christ in the cause of peace and justice in
this world. And in so doing has prepared countless souls for the joys in the
world to come. God be with the rest of us if this faithful man goes to his
eternal reward, for he will surely be missed and difficult to replace.

Don't cry for his departure, though he will be greatly missed. Remember, we
must not be self-fish. It is God that is calling him and we must let him go.
Remember the great accomplishments he has done in this complex world. May he
have a peaceful death.
Mexico and the rest of the world will miss our Papa Juan Pablo II.

Dear Heavenly Father, bless our Pope John Paul in these hours that have many
praying for his recovery. I have heard many things about what will be after
this holy being dies. I pray that you may give him more time so that he may
spread your word and help with the many troubles of the world. I know that you
will take him if it is his time. He will be at peace with you in heaven. With
these times we still need him to guide us, I fear that things will only
continue to worsen without his presence. Though I know that even in heaven,
just as you are, his holy presence will still be here. Please take care of him,
that at this time he will not suffer. And let him know that we are all praying
for him and thinking of him. God be with Pope John Paul. Amen.

I pray my dear father that the Peace of the Good Lord be with You, and I pray
father that who shall ever take your place as our pontiff, that they shall
continue the beautiful work that you have done all these years since I can
remember growing up with you. I have taught my son and grandchildren about my
faith and love for the Catholic Religion and about others religions as well and
to learn to respect all, but I learned & taught that the most important
thing of life is *LOVE THY NEIGHBOR* and to always *LOVE THY BROTHER
UNCONDITIONALLY and to forgive them no matter what UNCONDITIONALLY,* because
that is what your love for mankind has been shown and taught me throughout your
journey. We love you and will always remember you and I can't wait till the day
that we rejoice meeting at the right hand of the Father! I am crying tears now
because I know it's out of Selfishness being I don't want to let you go father,
to be with our Heavenly Father but know that when you are with our Father that
those tears will be tears of Joy. I love you Poppy and know you will be missed
terribly, I also pray dear Father when your journey to our Heavenly Father
transpires I pray that you will be with him to bring peace&love
back to this world and make it a better place to live in so I may be able to
leave here at Peace knowing my son and my grandsons will be safe and loved as I
was by you and yours.
May the Peace Of the Lord Be with YOU Eternally Father,

Not a day goes by that we aren't reminded of the evils in the world. So much
so that it overshadows the good and makes it hard to think mainly of the good
things. There is no amount of evil that can minimize the sorrow that all of
mankind is feeling at this time. As with the passing of any loved one there is
sadness, sorrow, and a sense of emptiness, however there is also a feeling of
true compassion and pride in the fact that we have been blessed with having
known the love of Pope John Paul. All of my thoughts are with Pope John Paul and

As I have watched the news from Rome today, I truely believe I now know how the early christians felt at the cruxification of our Lord. Like Jesus,
Pope John Paul has carried his cross for us these past 26 years. We now wait
for him to give up his spirit to the Lord. Pope John Paul truely
was deserving to be a decendent of St.Peter. The Lord could not have chosen a better man to
build his church on these past 26 years.

The Prophetic words of Carninal Newman as they
could have been spoken from our own brilliant and beautiful servant of God:
"God has created me to do him some definite service; He has committed some
work to me which he has not committed to another. I have my mission; I never
may know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the next. I have a part in
a great work; I am a link in a chain, a bond of connexion
[sic] between persons. He has not created me for naught. I shall do good, I
shall do His work; I shall be an angel of peace, a preacher of truth in my own

There have always been Saints walking among us. Pope Joh
Paul, is of course one of those Saints, canonized or not. I may not have agreed
(as a non-catholic) with all of his tenets, but with the Grace, Will and
Gentleness that the Lord imbued him with Pope John Paul has shaped this world
with the Lord's Spirit and Will. Bless you John Paul and the sweetest of rest

In a world that has such hatefulness, and dishonesty you have shined a
light, a light that everyone needs to see. As you take your finally journey
home I hope you remember how much you've helped this world, and all the people
you have touched. Not many people can speak, and acctually
be heard but you accomplished so much more than that. Not only were you heard
but you brought people together, and gave them hope, and I think that is the
greatest task anyone can accomplish in a life time.

I'm only 20, so this is the only pope that has ever been in my lifetime. I'm
named after him, but once a long time ago, when I was really young, I saw him
on TV at the Meadowlands, and I just cried. Even though I was at the age of 10
or 11 when little guys are just into joking, I knew the minute I saw him
talking on TV he was a good man. I'm Catholic, but wasn't really raised up in
the church. But I believe in God, and I believe Pope John Paul was sent from
God to help heal all the evil and misery on earth, and show people the way. May
he be with Jesus, Mary and all the angels forever. God be with you, Pope John
Paul, and may you keep watching over all of us.

I am sorry about the hard ship of your pope and a fellow human and may God
forgive him if he has done any wrong for we are not perfect. I read these post
and I can not help but wonder why people call the pope Holy Father and God,
God. For God alone is the "only" Holy Father. Even Jesus says not to
call any one Father or Rabbi, that there is only one that is your Father and
that is God. I pray that if God does find it offenceive
that people call the pope holy father that He(God) by His mercy and grace will
forgive all who may be an offence. I do not mean this to be mean or rude. I
being a Christain must pray for what I belive and for what I have been taught by God to be right.
My heart goes out to all the family, friends and love ones of the pope.

Holy Father, Vicar of Christ:
Your devotion to the Blessed Mother was well known. And as you believe Our Lady
of Lourdes guided that bullet so many years ago, may Our Lady now guide you
home. May you rest in the peace of God's love. I pray for you. And I pray for
my own father who is also in the hospital.
Oh Mary, Mother of God, no one who ever prayed to you for your intercession was ever turned away. I pray now that you ask your Blessed Son to bring your holy servant John Paul II into paradise. I pray that you ask your Blessed Son also to walk with my father and to heal him if it is the Father's will. Queen of Heaven, Blessed Virgin, do not turn away from those who grieve. Blessed are we who mourn, for we shall be comforted. I ask these things from you, dear Mother, in the name of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. As it was
in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. One God, forever
and ever. Amen.

sudden illness that closed her airway, resulting in her death. Since that day I
have begun my spiritual walk with Christ. I am not Catholic, but I have
followed the news of the Popes failing health. I have sat here and read
countless prayers for him with tears streaming down my face. My heart goes out
to him in his time of suffering...yet something tells me God has held out his
hand for this dear man...who has dedicated his life to Our God, his teachings,
and to any that needed his holy guidance. I am truly touched by those who have
known him and love him. I have never known him, and love him. May Jesus embrace

have been a fisher of many men...taught love and kindness throughout the world.
If Heaven's gates are open for you now, smile and take His hand, and I hope

I have been keeping vigil all night over the news concerning His Holiness,
Pope John Paul II-- I would like to comment... The world grieves, and for
Catholics the world over time is slowing and showing its feathers. Although the
end of a life so precious is absolutely inevitable, a shock is heard around the
world. His holiness lived as a man dedicated to his work and to the Lord-- only
to achieve a common goal of uniting people under Christ and as a truly
compassionate people. I think that it is a rare day when the world can stand
still to love a man that stood for so many things, and how odd it is that
people of every religion, world-wide can stand together during these last days.
There is a peace and a love only to be found on the other side of death, and
His Holiness lies dying having completed his life's work and dream. He truly
did unite nations of beliefs clashing. It is good to hear the stories of
humanity concerning the Pope... it shows that He is first a man, but a man that
can change lives and in his final days perhaps change the world. I had the
blessing of taking Eucharist from him when I was a young lady, I only wish that
I could remember it better. He is the only Pope that I have ever known, and
being a full Roman Catholic, His passing will be a mark on my heart. I have no
choice but to give in to the will of God, as do we all... but although the
world will feel a loss of such a gracious soul, He is at peace with God and
therefore we can be at peace with his leaving this place, and looking into the
face of the one man that he loved more than himself. He served freely,
willfully, and lovingly. My prayers go out for his earthly body to feel no more
pain, for I do not feel worry for his soul, I know he is in good hands. He is an
individual who gave every bit of himself for the betterment of others, and his
very existance makes me feel small. A true
inspiration, a true beaken, a true man..... God bless
you.

I was 10 years old when I first learned about Pope John Paul II. He has been
the only pope that I have ever known all my life. The pope that I will always
have the utmost respect and admiration for. He is someone who has set extremely
high standards for being the ideal pope there could ever be. I pray that the
congregation of cardinals will have a fortitude and wisdom to select a
successor who is worthy to follow the footsteps of Pope John Paul II. I will
miss his strength and kindness in leading the 21st century spiritually. He is a
person who truly represents sincere kindess, love,
affection and concern towards everyone regardless of any background from all
walks of life. My heart and spirit weeps for him moving on from our world
called earth to the Kingdom of God, though at
the same token I feel that it is high time to let go and finally allow him to
rest in peace. Pope John Paul II is a such a caring person and a spiritual saviour to the whole world who does not deserve to be in
pain. It is time for me to return the favor by sending him all the prayers I
can offer for his peaceful passing.
To Pope John Paul II: My family and I thank you for your strong and effective
intentions in saving the world and being an immense role model in our lives.
Pope we thank the Lord from the heavens above in allowing us to witness and
experience all your 26 years of miraculous hard work!!! The whole world loves

Pope John Paul II will go down as one of history's greatest leaders. His quiet dignity and forcefulness of conviction allowed him to transform the Church in its painful transition into the 21st century. This towering figure took everything fired at him from every evil, and turned it into a beacon of hope, not just for his faithful flock, but for all of mankind. He will be deeply missed, and I can guarantee you that only the most arrogant Cardinal who gets elected will dare take the name John Paul III, as nobody alive could fill John Paul II's mighty shoes.
Peace be with you all.

The Lord is with him now, as is Our Lady..He will go straight to heaven when his life ends.
He is a great man, and probably the best Pope in the history of the church.
We should mourn his leaving us, but be joyus in
that he is on his way to his rewards for taking so much time trying to help the
world be at peace.

The world will be a colder place without you. You have been a warm light
showing us the true value of life in a world that is to often to uninterested,
uncaring, and unconcerned about what really matters. Truely
you have been as Peter a rock of the church, solid and faithfull
Apostel to whom Jesus entrusted his Mission. We pray for you John Paul II, our

I posted earlier, but wanted to pray for The Holy Father, Pope John Paul, II. I am not Catholic, but respect the Catholic faith and that is why I am calling him The Holy Father. Who is to say which faith is the right faith? Below is my prayer (you don't have to kneel to pray, you can pray as you type a prayer).
Oh Heavenly Father, God of all, Dear Jesus..please
be with The Holy Father Pope John Paul, II as he comes to be with you. Bless
him and keep him. He has done so many wonderful things here on Earth for so
many people, even those who were not of his faith. Dear Heavenly Father, keep
him from feeling pain as he passes, and hold his hand as he comes to you. Be
with those of the Catholic faith as they lose their leader who has done so much
for the world. Heal their hearts and let them know that you will see that the
newly elected Holy Father will be a great Holy Father also. Be with his blood
family and his Country of birth. Be with his oldest friends. Heal the hearts of
everyone who is hurting over His passing. Thank you Heavenly Father for giving
this world Holy Father John Paul, II. In Jesus' name....Amen

Prayer for the Pope:
Lord Jesus, Good Shepherd,
look kindly on John Paul II,
your vicar on earth,
and grant him relief from his sufferings.
To this herald who has bravely proclaimed your Gospel,
give the consolation of your word.
To this faithful guardian of your Church,
send an angel to shield and protect him.
To this Priest who comforted and anointed the sick,
now bring peace in his own time of trial.
Hear the prayers of those who trust in you,
O Risen Lord and Savior,
who are seated at the right hand of the Father,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

I prayed for the pope at a small chapel from 8PM to 10PM. (the chapel closes
at 10PM) I prayed to Jesus to give the pope strength. I opened a booklet and
the heading was prayers for the Holy Father. This is the prayer I said over and
over.
Oh Jesus, shelter the holy father, our pope under thy sacred heart of Jesus.
give thy Light, Strength and consolation. I also, said the our fathers, the
hail mary's and the glory be to the father's. The
pope is especially, devoted to the blessed Mother and I am too. I am polish and
I understand the important part that the pope had in bringing down communism.
Please stay alive and get stronger John Paul II.

For a peaceful journey as the Pope takes his last sigh,
Thank you Sir,
For the many lives that you touch,
Spreading the word of God that his children love so much,
May Saint Peter meet you at the heavenly gates with open arms,
I hear in heaven that they even have lucky charms,
Peace be with you as you walk with God's speed,

Pope John Paul II is an exceptional man. He is honorable, trustworthy, humane, earnest, and a believer in that which is right. He has been a beacon of light in times that were so very dark; he held tight to his beliefs and tutored others to find the 'good' in this world. For myself, I will miss this wonderful human being. I have been watching and listening to John Paul for many years now and still find him so enlightening and invigorating. I had a conversation with a Catholic friend of mine last night and he could not understand that me, as a Jewish woman, could hold the Pope in such reverent regard. My love for this man comes from his being; his humanity; his endeavor to bring the peoples of this diverse world to hold each other with respect, understanding and kindness. John Paul survived heinous times, keeping his faith and teaching others what life and living are really all about.
I will miss this kind man. I will miss his smile. I know that others, of all faiths, feel the same way.
May G-d speed...Peace be with you. My hope is that your legacy will be
furthered by your successor.

John Paul 2 has influenced me so much. He works so much with the youth and
has given himself in everything he does. I am 17 years old and my role model is
the pope. Going to public school is not an easy thing, but when I am questioned
about my faith I look at John Paul as my example. Instead of being shy and
ignoring the misunderstanings people have on the
Catholic church I say a quick prayer and ask for the Holy Spirits guidance so
that I say the right things. I love John Paul 2, a living saint, he shall be

It is with sadness that I look to the passing of such a great man. This Pope
is the only one who I have a memory of in terms of leadership of the Holy
Catholic church in my lifetime.
He has been a guide, a proverbial lighthouse against numerous storms over the
past 30 years- he has guided and kept his faith while guiding ours.
I watched his first papal mass with the eyes of a child, amazed at the
pageantry as well as the strength of this amazing Polish leader. Thirty years
later, I watch through much older eyes- as this man passes on to Heaven..
I am so thankful that i was able to live in this time
with this man- A wonderful man- A great Pope
God Bless our Holy Father -

We have been so blessed to be given a Pope such as John Paul II. Although
it's sad to think that he will soon be leaving us, our family is consoled with
the thought that he will soon be with our Lord Jesus Christ in heaven. Thank
you, you will never be forgotten.

My heart is hurting and tears stain my cheeks as I watch and hear that we
are losing a guardian of peace and hope on this earth. Pope John II, has been a
beacon of light in these times of war, human abuse of children and fellow human
beings. He has, in his kind and gentle wisdom sought a healing for our souls
and for our hearts. May we hold up his banner of goodness and take the lessons
that he has given to us, in going forward. We can take joy in knowing he will
be with our Heavenly Father and will be cared for and told "You have done
well, my son". He will be missed here on earth, however he lit a candle of
hope and love that we can forever carry in our hearts. And we can carry his
messages and lessons forward to coming generations. Holy Father, I pray your
suffering to be short and your journey to be glorious.

Thank you Holy Father. May you now know eternal rest and peace as you meet
our Heavenly Father. Please don't forget us, pray for us, intercede for all of
us as we continue our journey.

As I pray for our Holy Father John Paul II I hope that his life of love,
humility, service and dignity continues to influence the world both now and in
the future. No doubt that humanity will lose a great man when this pope dies, but
that loss will softened if world leaders, clergy, members of all faiths and all
Catholics follow his example. May God bless you and hold you in the palm of his
hand Pope John Paul II. I will never forget you.

Dear God,
Here is our dear brother, Pope John Paul II. Bless him as he makes his journey
to your side.
He has made a difference in our lives and he has been an inspiration to all of
us here on this earth, especially he loved our young people "as you do."
His gentle face will be dearly missed, by us all. If it is your will, take him
into your loving arms and hold him close.
My dear earthly brother's and sister's let us try to live the life God wants us
to live and the dear Pope lived so well, let us fight for good so that evil
will not win!
God Bless Pope John Paul II...God Bless us all.

Jesus said "the Kingdom of God is in side you and
all around you" as long as this be true, then, John Paul II will never be
far from any of us.
