Fourth Lent
The Prodigal Son by David Bennett and Jonathan Bennett
Most Christians are more like the good son than the reckless prodigal son. We are called to accept those who repent and make amends, and even restore them to their former positions! Why? Because God does the same thing for us when we repent. A modern day sermon illustration of this story helps us to see the radical nature of Jesus' parable.
Fifth Lent
Straining Forward to What Lies Ahead by Jonathan Bennett
All things are rubbish compared to what we have in Christ. While Lent does seem gloomy, what is really gloomy is denying sin, and denying any way for the burdens of our wrongdoings to be lifted. Our sins, and their burdens, may be relieved through the grace of God in Jesus Christ.
Easter (Pascha)
We Gather to Proclaim a Festival by Derek Olsen
Delivered for a Paschal Vespers service, this sermon examines, light, darkness, and God's action in Jesus Christ.
Third Easter
Called in our Weakness by Derek Olsen
Derek tells us why we are all called in our weakness and imperfection, and why we Christians (like St. Peter) are all wet.
Six Easter
The Struggle of the Early Church by David Bennett
The nascent Church, built upon the power of Christ's bodily Resurrection, went through many struggles that we go through today.
Seven Easter
Full Participation in the Life of God by Derek Olson
The gospel reading appointed for Seven Easter Year C is quite amazing, and calls us to participate in the refining and transforming love of God.
Pentecost
Come Upon Us Mighty Wind! by David Bennett
Had we been the Apostles in the Book of Acts we probably would have resisted the miracles on the day of Pentecost. Had a flame rested on us, we would have blown it out! Bennett's sermon focuses on the need for renewal in the Holy Spirit, both individually and collectively, which is especially desperately needed in the mainline churches. Using the Swiss watchmakers as an illustration, this sermon shows how once great institutions can become sterile and obsolete in just a few years.
Transfiguration Day
The Glory of God by David Bennett
Delivered in 2000, this sermon talks about God's glory revealed to the common men known as Jesus' apostles. God's glory is available to us as well, only in more subtle form.
Twenty-Third Sunday After Pentecost
Creation Cries Out, "The Birth Pangs are Drawing Nigh" by Derek Olsen
As businesses get into the Christmas season, creation bids us to prepare for something greater than tinsel and garland: the coming of Christ the King.
